3 More Art Forms That Should Shrink To A Tweet

Yesterday SPIN announced that they will be reducing the majority of their music reviews to 140 characters or less, prime for tweeting.

The transformation is a welcomed update that should fit the music community quite nicely. In an age where nearly every band offers free streaming and some offer free digital downloads, sampling music is now very quick and easy. It only makes sense that reading music reviews should be just as quick and easy to foster proliferation of the art form.

The result of this alignment should be an increase in online listening for those bands that SPIN reviews. Less work and more listening? Sounds like a win-win.

Here are three more art forms that could use a tweet sized transformation:

1) Films- Numerous short reviews may encourage more film reviewers to expand outside of the Hollywood scene and shed some light on independent films – and that may do the entire film industry some good. A Tweet sized summary plus a Youtube trailer is a no-brainer.

2) Books- Everybody likes to judge a book by its cover. Book reviewers should consider providing a quick summary aided by a twitpic of each book’s cover. Similar to films, shorter reviews could grow the amount of reviews that publications could share each month- meaning more exposure for the starving artist.

3) Theater- Theater reviewers have perhaps the largest challenge of communicating an emotive live experience through social media. While video and image may pale in comparison to the live performance, reviewers should consider linking their tweet sized review to an audio clip, as soundtracks are often reminiscent and unique to each theater’s production.

A shift toward social media is imminent for nearly every company and art-form. It’s not a question of when you embrace it, but how.
